Poker, video poker and Casino Hold’em: the differences

Compare player-versus-player poker, video poker and Casino Hold’em: opponents, payouts and the rules that apply.

Poker, video poker and Casino Hold’em: the differences

“Poker” in a menu can refer to different games. Similar cards and hand names do not imply identical rules, payouts or opponents. Check whether players build a shared pot, a paytable determines the payout, or the dealer’s hand affects the result.

Poker against other players

At a standard Texas Hold’em table, players compete against each other. Their money or chip bets form a pot. It goes to the player left after folds or to showdown winners. The operator may charge rake or a tournament fee, depending on the format.

Video poker

In common video poker games, a player receives five cards, chooses which to keep and replaces the rest. The final hand and the machine’s specific paytable determine the payout. There is normally no shared pot with opponents.

Two similarly named machines can pay differently for a full house or flush. Published theoretical RTP applies to a particular paytable and strategy assumptions; it does not promise an individual player a return over a short session.

Casino Hold’em and dealer games

In Casino Hold’em and other casino Hold’em variants, players usually compare their hand with a dealer’s under separate rules. Forced bets, dealer qualification and extra payouts may apply. Rules from one game named Hold’em cannot automatically be carried over to another.

How to check a game listing

Check the game name and provider, then open the rules and paytable. Find out whether there are other real players, how the pot is formed, which bets are required and how ties settle. A Live label can mean a live dealer; it does not itself mean player-versus-player poker.

A catalogue therefore needs separate labels for player-versus-player poker, video poker and casino poker. Combining them into one ranking without explaining the differences would confuse readers.
